Interesting picture. I wonder if your aunt knew the Domroese family or lived near them?

The artist is Ewald F. Domroese, born on 26th September 1916 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana. He’s listed in the 1940 census at 405 Meadow Avenue, Crawfordsville as the son of Fredrick and R Dorothea Domroese, together with his younger sister Charlotte. He died in Crawfordsville on 30th October 1974 (aged 68).

He would only have been 15 or 16 years old at the time he painted your picture in 1931 (I think it unlikely there were two artists with the name Ewald Domroese). The first mention of him I could find in the “art world” was in the 1948 supplement to Mallett’s 1944 Index of Artists. He seems to be known for watercolours in realist style and later had a painting titled “Garden Flowers” in the 50th Annual Indiana Artist’s Exhibition (1957) at the John Herron Art Museum in Indianapolis. His father Fred had an oil painting titled “Lagoon” in the same exhibition.

Couldn’t find any auction listings but a gallery has one of his small watercolours currently on sale for $130, although it was painted in later years than yours, when he was an adult.

I'll leave the pin to those who know what they're talking about. :laughing7:
