That is a great looking piece with plenty of detail. Congratulations. It looks to me to be about the right size of a bridle rosette. Someone will be along shortly with a positive ID.

My first thought was... it has to do with mourning, as in, the death of a loved one.
Funny, but I don't see it being a rosette... possibly coffin decoration?
