its a spanish reale. how big is it? there are several denominations of reales 1/2 reales all the way up to 8 reales. the design on them all is the same. the differance is the size of them. they were fairly common currency in the us before the gov. minted thier own coins. great find!

I "found" it in a load of "junk" I bought by the pound awhile back from a coin dealer who didn't have time to check everything that he got.

Did you ever get this question answered?
If not, here's some info: The coin was minted at the Lima mint between 1787 to 1803; the years of the assayers (I-J) --as shown on your coin. You said: "It's a little bigger than a nickel and a little bit smaller than a quarter." The nickel is 21.2mm, the quarter 24.3mm yet the 1R is 20mm and the 2R is 28mm. The idea of the coin being a counterfeit cannot be ruled out.

I had several identified by my Anthropology Professor when I was in College, but still have several yet to be Identified.

Here's more info on your Coin #1, Post #8. The mintmark is either SMTS'E' or 'B'.
The 'E' or 'B' stand for the workshop number in which the coin was produced.
The 'first' workshop (Greek Alpha) would have an 'A' after SMTS. Having a B or E designates either the 'second' (Beta) or 'fifth' (Epsilon)workshop.
The SM stands for Sacra Moneta, the words literally meaning Sacred Money.
The TS is the mint mark for Thessalonica (now Salonika, Greece).
