Old Spoon fragment & Sanctus Bell in the Enchanted Forest

Hello all,
Went on a random stone wall search in what I believe were a Colonial Governors fields, and a shortcut to the town center.
The scenery is pretty spooky, stranglers all over the trees, stone walls almost sunk from view, fallen trees, & ones that are about to fall, I thought was hearing people talking a few times. a creepy & wierd hunt.
Best find & very deep, early riveted spoon bowl, was riveted to a handle that was not anywhere nearby, I excavated & searched a large area around the find.
shown with an heirloom copper spoon (allegedly 1600s era, 1 rivet & solder) that I inherited, for comparison, the found spoon appears an older design.
two brass items, unmarked whatsits, possibly weights?
And what I thought was going to be the best Find of the Hunt,(judging by signal and location, dead center between 3 large trees.
A nickel plated brass bell, 2-7/8" diameter, looks like it had attachment for 3 clappers.
Believe it is a Roman catholic 'Sanctus Bell', as they have multiple clappers. close match,Bottom pic. found close to 1800s church.
A brass acorn & oak leaf piece , kinda goes with that Squirrel token posted earlier.
Also, what looks like another musket trigger guard escution plate ??
No early coins from this area yet, but I think anyone on foot or horseback would take this route rather than the main road, Will keep hunting here.
Thanks for looking! & HH to all

thanks for your reply!
Im certainly not a metal expert, the spoon has a green tint overall, and the broken edge shows red.
It has not been cleaned other than a water soak, still a lot of dirt attached.

Re: Copper Spoon bowl From The Enchanted Forest

I have 3 old spoons that are oxidized in the exact same manner. Eager to see what they end up being made from (copper or pewter).

Re: Copper Spoon bowl From The Enchanted Forest

Looks like some great history you found, the area does look kind of creepy, like some of the forests here in North Central Pa. Are you going back there to do some more? If so, keep those pics coming. :icon_thumleft:...PP

Great looking finds there Herbie!
Love the old bell . . . I wonder why 3 clappers though? :icon_scratch:
Really like the old spoon, is it possibly bronze? Looks to be
pewter though with that type of corrosion.

Re: Copper Spoon bowl From The Enchanted Forest

I LOVE hunting those creepy sites like that! That looks a lot like my spots! :D

Cool finds Herbie

Howdy steelheadwill from another Herb.

You have some unique looking trees in that area you've found and lots of general looking trees as well. The acorn think looks neat, maybe a company logo with the rivets gone. I'm in northern California and some of the wilderness I hike in has some forboding looking forests that I feel a bit sketchy in. Never heard voices in them but I have down on the river where the miners used to be, kind of a different experience that ones mind goes through during one of those moments. Do you have any critters in your woods you need to watch out for? Black Bears here are thick where I hike and camp for two weeks at a time and of course there are rattle snakes I need to be aware of.

Interesting finds and I hope you come across some even better ones! HH 63bkpkr

Re: Copper Spoon bowl From The Enchanted Forest

i'd say the spoon bowl is copper or brass.never seen a pewter spoon bowl with red edges where it's corroded.pewter doesn't turn that color
that acidic soil in those pines will eat way anything

After some research, I find that Catholic Altar or Sanctus bells were often equipped with multiple clappers. they come in units of several bells and singles.
this bell was found less than 1/8 mile from a church built in the mid 1800's.
I remember their unique tone very well from my childhood.
I was an 'Altar Boy' for a short time, one of my duties was to ring the bells at the proper times during service. Heres a set of 4 below:

Never seen copper or brass, turn a grey, white-ish colour either :icon_scratch:, it normally would have a green, or brown patina :icon_scratch:, that's why I thought a pewter bowl would be more likely :dontknow:

Thanks for your replies,
not sure of its content, can only describe :dontknow:
The pic is rather pale, but the greener spots are visible.
I don't want to clean much further, too fragile, am soaking in oil.
HH to all!
