Old tavern site gives up a few goodies- Leavenworth, Hayden & Scoville Button...
I finally had a chance over the last few weekends to return to an old tavern site that I originally detected 2 years ago. I have found many buttons at the site, and most are in nice condition, but the TREBLE GILT ORANGE button I dug today is by far the best. The back mark is simply a number "1" or the letter "I", which I am not familiar with. The gilt and shank are entirely intact, but there is stubborn dirt on the front (and a little concrete-like dirt around the shank) which I am afraid to try to clean for fear of losing the gilt. I also found the plated and other gilted button, which has an unusual back mark. It appears to say L.H. & S. W CON which is Leavenworth, Hayden & Scoville Company, Waterbury CT. According to Don in SJ, this back mark is listed by Tice as 1814. I also dug the cup fragment which is a nice piece. I wish I could have found more of it.
I also dug a very small buckle, the size of my pinkie nail, what appears to be an iron button, and pieces of pewter flatware. On my earlier outings I also found clay pipe stems and a whiffle tree.
One thing that baffles me is the lack of coins. I found a few Wheaties, and the "butterface" 1909 nickel. (The reverse is awesome, but her face...?) The only older coin I have found at the site is an 1836 large cent found more than 2 years ago. There is a ton of iron, and i had to go very slowly and dig all of the questionable signals, but I may need to dig more of the larger iron which I am sure is masking more finds. My only guess why I haven't found more old copper is that the site was detected in the past by a person who rushed through and did not dig any of the "iffy" signals that these buttons typically give.
Thanks for looking!
