I'm not sure if this the the right place to ask about this particular find but I know there are plenty of silverware experts that haunt this room so I'm hoping for a bit of luck.

While i was searching for some steel to make a harmonic balanced pulled for yet another big Cadillac, I noticed a large bucket full of old silver plate spoons and other serving pieces that had come from the local precious metal dealer as junk

I sifted through and was able to come up with one really neat piece simply marked P. Garrett. I don't think it's silver but appears to be really old.

Has anybody heard of this particular maker before? I'll do my research when I get home later but I'm hoping I can at least get pointed in the right direction before

it's early coin silver by Philip Garrett 1800-1835 from Philadelphia.

Good job saving history from the furnace, looks like a nice old spoon.

Minor update on the spoon

I had a bit of free time this afternoon and was able to work out some of the dents (I have an extensive selection of silver working hammers) and give it a polishing.

Its a bit under 6" and looks pretty good now.

Thanks to those that replied and said it was coin silver. There are no marks indicating that but it's definitely not plated.

older coin silver as well as most coin silver is not usually marked as such. once you see enough of it it's easier to figure out based on how the maker stamped it. it's just a little different than silver plate not easy to explain with words.

Well I'm going back tomorrow to see what else was in the bucket that could of been missed. If that particular shop sends buckets like that often, I'll have the scrapyard owner set them aside. It helps that he's a great friend and will happily do it for me
