I found this token at an old carriage stop. It is so corroded but I can make out the letters "buren" and "meta" it has words on both sides. I would like to know a safe way of cleaning it or if anybody knows what it is. Thanks.

It's more than likely that it is either copper or brass.
A hot peroxide bath wouldn't hurt..

If you imagine the hole is 12 o'clock in the second pic it looks like there is a 2 and then maybe CE after that?

The 2 being at 10 o'clock. Forgot to put that.

Thought of something else. Martin Van Buren was US president from 1837-41 and there are some tokens with him on it. Just maybe.

My above link is a Van Buren hard times token, which includes the details the OP mentioned, on the right side of the image shown at the top of the page (although I can't seem to make out the same ones), however I just now noted that their description is for the wrong token, so ignore that part.

Sorry about that. I looked at your link but not close enough. I got mine from googling buren. I had never even heard of him. I was wondering if the meta he sees is really part of Martin.
