Hi there,
There's a few old train stations in my area. I was debating on detecting them or not. They seem like they'd be very trashy but maybe since they could have been heavily populated in the early 1900's, it might be a good spot to find coins? If I do, should I start in the yards or go right for the station itself? Cookies to anyone that can help me. ^^

Cheers,
Drewski

I'd get aerials of the station and its surrounds from both today and 'back in the day'.
I'd then overlay then to see if the area off the parking lot of the old station is still an 'open' area--then MD that area.

Great advice. I wonder if the town clerk would have the aerials. Only one way to find out! Have you had any luck with stations?

Use Google Earth for a current aerial. If the town clerk hasn't a clue about old aerials, inquire at your library's reference desk. If they don't know, ask them for the name and number of your county's historian. And there are many other sources for 'back in the day' aerials: Your city's Planning Department, your local college or university, or the granddaddy of all aerial repositories: the US Lib. of Congress Map Room.

if you find the right one - I knew I guy that hit a few - yes very trashy - but he got some nice artifacts
RR tags - keys etc and some old silver
you never know till you try - good luck

High, high on my wish list is a railroad tag. Haven't found one yet, most old stations around here are gone or concreted over, but I still keep hoping.

Old stations may still be owned by the rail road company and are private property. Some may have been sold and are owned by someone else, again they are private property.

Do some research and some asking around.

I never hunted one, but I bet they are very trashy, but still have some good targets around them.

I don't know about other states, but here in CA, a lot of train stations had parks adjoining them. And I have found silver in such parks around the state. In fact, one of my gold coins came from a park next to a train station :)

You dont hear many stories about finding gold coins but I know two guys that found a gold coin at an old train station

I would go directly to the station and work out from there. Most people go there first for tickets and restrooms, wait for other people to join them etc. Go for the money first always!!!!

Four Civil War era rifles were found under the platform at the Weldon, NC train station.... back in the '90s.... that's 1990s! Should be local press coverage in some archives there. Never pass up such sites if given the opportunity. TTC

I apologise, but, in my opinion, you are not right. I am assured. I can defend the position. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.
