Old wooden seaman's trunk

Found this at an estate sale today, chock full of horse shoes. After getting it home and cleaning it up, there is still this spot on top where another box had sat, and all the finish and paint is worn away. Does anyone have any advice for what I should do with the top? Does it look ugly or what?

If it where mine I'd remove all dust and cobwebs with some damp paper towels and leave as is. It's beautiful just like that.

oh with the information stated about being it being a "sea chest" and the fact it is of the carpenter chest type of style * even thought it was full of horse shoes (thus clearly repurposed for land use ) I thought of a retired sea going carpenter either becoming a blacksmith or else selling his tool chest to a blacksmith as a possible way that it could be all 3 things --a seaman's box (sea going carpenter --known as (shipwrights) and it winding up at a blacksmiths shop somehow --thus full of horse shoes)
