Wow what a great day! Found this 1798 Large Cent on a 1700's era farm in Galway NY about 4 inches down. This part of the farm was also used as a coffee house and stop for the J Parker & Co. stagecoach line. As I checked out the property I noticed a period water well pump and figured maybe passengers would stop there for a drink and maybe lose a coin or two.

This is how she looks after a brief hot peroxide bath and Q tipping. There is a lot more cleaning to do and I'll re post pictures as I proceed.

The second coin is I believe a Hard Times Token which has just been toothpicked. I'm in love with this one because of the "Millions for defence but not a cent for tribute" message on the back. The front say's Merchants Exchange Wall St. N. York Built 1827 Burnt 1835....Not one cent for tribute token rear.webpNot one cent for tribute token front.webp

Ed-those are both terrific finds! I am so envious of that cent! Ecxellent job!

Thanks Mudslide. Was so excited I didn't even mention the 1943 quarter and a flat button from the same site. What's funny is the owner told me I was wasting my time as some other guy had detected the site a few years back. He missed a few didn't he lol

Awesome finds. I love finding the LC and tokens. Congratulations !

Incredible finds man ! Is that token fairly rare ?

Thanks guys, I haven't had the chance to research the token. Don't know if its rare or not but I love it one way or the other :)

A beautiful 1700s LC and a nice condition hard times token. Can't get any better than that.

Well done!

Nice finds Fast Ed.

CONGRATS ON TWO WONDERFUL FINDS! :notworthy::occasion18: :icon_thumright: I love the simplicity of design on those old large cents and yours looks really good. I've never seen one except in pictures, so if I should happen to dig one over here on the west coast of USA, I'd probably fall over backwards hollering with glee. HAVE FUN! Andi

FANTASTIC! :icon_thumleft:

That HTT is really nicely preserved, and an awesome find! Bet it gave a hot signal, huh?

The large cent is pretty dang nice for a dug one, too. My buddies down here in GA have found some really pristine ones (usually dated 1798), but my one-and-only Draped Cent so far was pretty rough when I dug it, and tragically, even worse after I accidentally "burnt it up" while trying to clean it via electrolysis. It's a featureless slug now, but when I dug it, you could see LIBERTY and her hair bow, enough to ID the type.

Speaking of oldest coins found to date, I just posted mine a little while ago (though I found it in 2011).

Not even close to the oldest Greek coin dug in the US & posted on Tnet, & many Roman coins are posted your side of the pond, Arcadius being one of the latest, not the earliest (like the Hadrian the other week). Still a nice find.

OP,

The token is very nice, with what it says on it, I wonder if its more commemorative medallion than spending token?

Awesome find, Congrats to ya.....:occasion14:

Thanks everyone, to answer a few questions : 1. I'm a newbie and no Buck it doesn't get any better but it might :)

2. Hey Andi, there is an advantage to living in New York State I just never knew what it was till I took this hobby up. Of course I can't take an hour and go find some gold nuggets like you left coasters can :)

3. Lordmarcovan, can't wait to check out your finds. Yup both the token and the largie rang sweet music at about 85 on the AT Pro. My knees start knockin when I get signals like that he he :)

4. Crusader, Guess I miss titled the post a bit. What I meant is it is "my" oldest coin to date. Danged Britts - just kidding :)

Two great looking coins, congrats on the finds. If it has been detected before and your popping coins like this out at 4" the chances are good that there's more in the area.

Thanks pepperj, the great part is that this site is just 5 acres of what was once an 800 acre farm. There are unsubstantiated stories that Gen. Lafayette stayed here with his friend Gen. Earl Stimson of the NY Militia and my original intent was to try and find something we could link to Lafayette. Nothing definitive yet.

You titled it fine, I understood what you meant. Maybe you missed my point to the person I was quoting - the point being that Roman Coins found in the US are not that rare.

Just ask my wife, I have developed point missing to an art form. Its all good Crusader and thanks for the input. I'm a bit in awe regarding your MDing history :)
