MineLab Excal II & Bounty Hunter Land Star
A little bit of sun, a fully charged Excal II, about 2 miles as the crow flies I guess from Martha Washington's old homestead, the White House. I've hunted this land before knowing some of its history. The land had activity before the Revolutionary War and remained active until well after the Civil War. In the past I had found military buttons, a musket trigger and guard, lots of bullets and a few coins. Two months ago I found a 1943 silver half dollar....it glistened like a star when it popped out of the hole, last year it was a late 1890's dime. But his time its wasn't a tone I was familar with, if you've been near an Excal you know what I mean when I say it takes time to learn the tones. Well, I'm all for the odd and unique, which is why I love you guys so much so when that odd tone came through I had to dig. The dirt stuck to it was like concrete so I had to wait until I got home to soak it... the rest of the hunt I had to beat off the other detectorist who wanted to spit and rub on it.
What a surprise, a copper coin, she's seen better days indeed but once cleaned up some and had a jeweler check it out under his batman glasses, looks like maybe a 1718 dump half penny. Woohooo, happy dance.

You brought me right back to my first George I find! :headbang:

I don't think you have a dump issue, and looks like 1722 to me.

Back is wrong? You're saying the Britannia is not a match? It's actually the bust side that's not what you suggest, not the dump issue. What about the back is different?

Iron patch, I looked up the 1722 it has some flower looking thing on the reverse, this coin has a person seated holding a staff. On the obverse the letters in Georgivs go over the top of the head, not on the side like the 1722.

Any better way to photoshop it or clean it so we can see it better in a scan?

That would be a Rosa Americana you were looking at. This is a second issue, George I 1722 Halfpenny. It's slightly different than the dump (first) issue.

well done on your bit of Georgian, i never tire of finding them,

Ah ha, cool, but the bottom of my wreath tie at the bottom of the ponytail is like the 1718. I can see the two ties and they are high on nape of the neck. And the nose on mine is pointer it looks like...poor George, this many years later and we're still poking fun lol.

I agree the bow looks more like the dump, but the profile looks like the 2nd issue to me. What is the diameter in mm? That will tell the story once and for all!

But I'll go on record saying I think I need another cup of coffee because the bow looks like a match for the dump.

Nice george I Charlene  Congrats !

Don't need it, I do agree with you now and probably need some type of medication. :laughing7: Beside the bow being a match, there's also a difference in Space from his hair to the V, so it is a dump issue. The bust still hits me as the other type, but is over-ruled by the things just stated. A 1718 dump issue halfpenny isn't something that turns up every day... most posted are 1717.

Had you dug the Farthing version, and was a clear 1718... $$$

WOW! Nice find. Is that the field you took me to? If so now I really want to go back. When I was there I only found a .58 bullet, you find the silver half. HH. :headbang:

very nice finds!

Nice ! Keep looking as you may find a better one in that area .

Nice recovery Charlene. I'm sure you will remember that tone next time. WTG, Quindy in Tennessee.
