Alaska to resume bear-killing program, despite court order finding it to be void

By:

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game said Friday it will resume its predator control this weekend in Western Alaska, despite a court ruling two days earlier that determined the program remains in violation of the state constitution.

The program, which is using aircraft to kill bears in the area used by the ailing Mulchatna Caribou Herd, will resume on Saturday, the department said in a statement.

In its statement, the Department of Fish and Game said Superior Court Judge Christina Rankin’s decision against issuing a restraining order that was sought by an environmental organization, the Alaska Wildlife Alliance, allows predator control to be carried out, as authorized by the Board of Game in March.

Regardless of your opinion of the killing of bears, I disagree with the approach. Africa is a good example of how to make money off animals, while achieving culling/population goals.( They also learned you can take a photo of an animal 100 times living vs once dead). Need to kill off 20 elephants in a certain district…. No problem, 25k/tag and it’s done. Instead of shooting from the air by state employees, why not have a special hunt…..$10k/tag. Use that money for conservation for the caribou.

Yep lots of people would love to get a bear to eat.

I ran into a fellow that had a pack of trained dogs who would contact say BLM / Forest service and let them know he is available to humanely kill problem bears and they contacted many times for the service. He had to stop when the State no longer allowed dog pack hunting. Now there is a real problem with bears in some spots.

That’s as about as efficient, and low cost for the state, as you can get

Yep and now "It's against the law".

Extremely low costs and very efficient as the guy I don't think he charged a fee to the tax payers?
Even if he did charge a low cost near the end to help transport the dogs and feed that is way less cost anyway you look at it.

Well the State is going to claim that shooting from the air is cost effective and there is no need to clean up the animal as nature will take care of that all in a very short time frame.
Plus there is immunity using trained state employee's
