I had a nice hunt and recovered mostly artifacts. I finally dug a complete harmonica instead of the normal reeds or partial reeds. It is in bad shape but still somewhat complete. I found a canning jar lid with the glass but the metal is mostly gone. I recovered 4 buckels, and an old pocket knife. The pocket knife is toast. Six wheat pennies from 1925 to the 1950's. A couple of weights that I assume would be for a small scale marked 3/4 and 2. I guess that would be ounces. A little clad, and the nicest Indian that I dug for its age. 1864 but not a fatty. You can read Liberty on the head dress and also many of the other details. It must have been dropped right after minting and looks pretty good for 154 years old. I forgot to mention I dug this Indian at 10 inches. Came here to see if it was an 1864 (and it was!) I had the same experience as you. I dug an 1864 in beautiful shape - much more beautiful than the other indians from the same farm field - and had it for a month before someone told me to look for the "L" on the ribbon.

It's really tiny, but I'm pretty sure yours has it too. Another way to tell is the pointed bust. Here's mine by the way:

Part of the reason this penny is in such good condition was (I think?) they added bronze to the alloy. Anyway, the 1864 "L" variety is actually worth some money. And yours, in this good a condition? Definitely look it up!

Congrats by the way. You'll probably never dig one this good again!

EDIT: Here's the location of the "L" by the way.

Nice IHC! Need to take a closer look and see if it has the L on the ribbon of the headdress

I did that with a loop and it appears to have the L.

I did look at it with a jewelers loop and it appears to have the L

Take another look with your loop. The 1864 L bronze alloy also has a few varieties, some overstrike dates. Mine has a piece of another date inside the 4 or 8 I forget. I'll have to dig mine out.

That IHP is incredible condish. Loving the variety of relics too. Great hunt!

Beautiful Indian! Congrats! The lead weights are for fishing. Lots of folks used to buy molds and make their own.

Congrats on that blazer of an Indian. Looks like you have some real good dirt out your way.

That is a gorgeous coin!! Congrats on the excellent hunt :icon_thumleft:

:o She is a beauty ! Great looking 1864 Indianhead Cent . What is not to luv when a dug coin has won the battle against Mother nature ....

That is one sweet Indian Princess! Beautiful :occasion14:

I went looking for my 1864 L re-punched date variety and found 3 1864s, the 1864 L RPD is on the right. The other two if they had an L the L was worn off.

Here's a close up of this variety I found online, 8 and 6 re-punched.
