Optimal soil moisture

Is there a soil moisture level that is best for metal detecting?

I know from my experience that digging in dry dirt is different than digging the day or 2 after a good rain.

Wetter is better here in Ohio if you want to go deeper. optimal for me is to have the soil wet enough that the plugs stick together since it makes them harder to detect when placed back in the ground and you have less loose dirt to rake back into the hole.

I should've been a little more specific in my post. It should be 2 parts:. The physical digging part and optimal moisture for the machine to work better.

My side yard has some gravel, like it may have been a driveway or parking spot once. The ground is really hot there when wet. I have to run the LRP Sens at 4 or 5 and ground balance often.

I get digger fever and forget to do any science. I'm gonna have to do some testing and make some notes. Soil condition, target ID, depth on display, then mark the targets and then sweep them when dry.

Unless it will turn to mud...the wetter the better IMO. I see obvious depth increases as the soil softens and becomes moister.
