Orange button help

I am not sure if it is a cuff link or button. The back seems to have some numbers or letters. It cleaned up real nice, it is 1/2 inch round. Thanks in advance

it looks like a wax seal stamp

I would say it is half of a cuff link.
And pretty sure the stamping is PAT APL 1860

Based on a diameter of only 1/2 inch I would think it was a better size for a collar stud?

IM thinking its a wax seal
the orange may be the adhesive used to attache the seal

Hunting Dog you hit it on the head. Now can you take a shot at time period? anyone? It was found in a farm field, with the house dating back to 1800. Hunting dog, Can you send me link that you used to send picture, maybe there is a story with it. I did think the date was 1860 on the cuff link but thanks for the patent applied also.

Now looking at my piece and the one you posted it looks the same. I now see the DEC up top and it could be 1883.
