🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Military?

Found this at a site where I have found flat buttons and square nails. Believe the site was abandoned by early 1900’s. The object measures 3/4” by 1/2”. Not sure of composition but rang up 18 on my Legend. Maybe off of a saddle? I think I see Numbers across top and Letters on bottom but can’t read them. Thanks in advance.

Have you done a pencil rubbing or chalk dusting to see if the numbers or letters are more easily readable?
