Owl Artifact

I found this thin brass plate with an owl design in the center of it at an old house site in central Mississippi. I actually found two identical ones in the same hole, so whatever this went to it had 2 of them. Does anybody have a clue that could help me determine what this could've been used for or attached to??

Owls are symbolic of night, evil, mystery, and even wisdom. This owl looks almost sinister though.
