I will be heading to Padre Island in about two weeks on buisness and I am going to visit a local treasure hunter at his place of buisness. I have some leads on areas to search, but would like some hard info on leagalities and areas that are not illegal to search in. I have asked several locals but have gotten different answers. I was hoping someone who has been there before could assist me so I would be prepared when I got there. Thanks and happy hunting

Are you all referring to padre island in Texas? If you all plan to go, could I go also?

Peter

Are you stilll interested in going
I might be heading down as far as Mansfield Pass
Probably in Jan sometime

If you are going to Padre Island you should invest in a book about the area. I saw this book once (now no long being printed) called Padre Island 4-wheel drives to spanish galleons. You can still find it if you check on the net. From what I know the book explains in deetail where the ship sits off of N Padre Island. If the park rangers catch you with a metal detector they'll take everything to include your vehicle....just before they take you to jail.

Dear group;
AFAIK metal detecting on Padre Island is still legal in the country park and the state park areas, however it is VERY illegal in the National Seashore area, to include Malequite beach, Little Shell and Big Shell.
Your friend;
LAMAR

Lamar:
Just answer ONE! Question?
??? Why is it illegal ? ???

And!
Not on State Land/parks/etc...!
I know of an area, not far from the "4wwd Sign", that is an old silver ship wreck
On the island, in the dunes, Not! offshore,

I used to have photos of Clumps/piles, of silver coins
If I run across them (the photos) , I'll publish them here!
Anyone care to visit "said" site?
Now!
Remember .... :-X
Please be a "Sheeple" ;D
::) No! Filling your pocket with Clumps, or, of coins, etc ::)

I lived in Corpus Christi for 21 years, and as a young man used to comb the beaches in the early morning. I never found a thing except shells. However, you should look up Frenchie, if he is still alive, and ask him about the shipwrecks he found. He used to run a bar/restaurant just across the causeway from Flour Bluff.

gunner3160:

I believe that someone, awhile back, told me "Frenchie" has go to that "Big Treasure Beach" in the sky? :'(
I am planning a few trips down to ""Mansfield Pass" sometime in the near future ...
Care to go along ?
It'll be Just a "day trip" ! (In my 4x4)
I want to see if any of those 1554 Silver Coins are laying around, on the beach! ::)
Heck!
At, 1500+ dollars each .... ;D
Doesn't take many to make someone's/my day! ;)

Cptbil:
No can do, since I now live in northern Utah, and I am enjoying the snow and NOT missing the south Texas heat and humidty! I remember reading several articles in the Caller-Times over the years about Frenchie - seems as if he had an old surplus "DUCKW" he used to travel the island. I seem to remember that he found several wrecks over the years, and recovered many coins etc, but the largest and richest one was not in the water. He was not able to recover much before another tropical storm re-buried it, and he never found it again. If he has truly passed on, he took most of his tales to the grave with him. One might search the archives of the CC Caller-Times for more articles about his exploits, and find more clues. If you do go down to the Mansfield Cut, I'm sure you are aware of quicksand that might be found. Be careful! I almost lost a good Honda dirt bike in one spot not too far into the 4WD area. Another treasure that is available to all is the excellent fishing down there. Lots of sharks.

Gunner:
::) BOY!
Do, I know about that "Quicksand" ! :P
It seems that about every time I go down there I see someone's "wheels" going to the bottom ! :P
I have stood on the Mansfield Jetty and seen lots of big fish swim by!
Once, I saw six dolphins playing with a couple of turtles in the "pass"!
They were pushing the turtles up on the bank !
AND! Keeping them from swimming back!
I know of an area, behind the dunes, in which there is a "Silver Coin Ship" wreck !
I'm going to be revisiting it soon!
Say!
If you're in Utah, My partner, "Doc", and I may be up your way on this year's trip!
Maybe we can run into each other and shoot the breeze over a cup of coffee, or such ?
