Hope this isn't too late but there is "ghost" west of Weatherford. It was named
Carter and was briefly quite a place. I heard there was a racetrack there but did
not find it when I looked in the 70's. Old man Prather had markers put out with
vital statistics in various places. He had a homestyled museum nearby of old guns
and Indian relics that would make your eyes bug out. Hope you will check it out
and let me know if you find Carter. cheers . . . lastleg

Myelo: In my last post I failed to check the map. Carter is between Weatherford
and Springtown, not West but NE some 20-25 miles on Hwy 51 on the left off
the road a mile or two. Does your map show it? This place was out in the sticks
when I was there. No houses, no people anywhere around. I'm sure the turnoff
is marked. I have not searched for it on web yet. Mr Prather, who was nearly
100 years old when he started coming in my Oak Cliff cafe, wrote several books
about the old days in Parker County. They were privately printed, he gave me
three signed copies, they describe some interesting history, Comanche territory,
old braves sneaking back to retrieve valuables left behind when they were pushed
onto OK reservations. After he died I took my Dad and my hunting buddy to
Carter, which is less than 30 miles from where my folks lived back then. We
scratched around a few hours but didn't find much. We looked for the signs of
habitation but there was just too much space and not enough time. I have
photos of the decriptive signs (small markers) he had put by the roads around
where Parker stood. I would guess they are still there unless the vandals haven't
destroyed them. You are the first I have told about this so maybe it might be
worth your time to check it out. Keep in touch. . . . lastleg

Wow! I am definitely going to check it out. Apparently, the only buildings standing are an old church and something that is currently being used as a chicken coupe or something. Thanks so much for the information. I've mapped it and it is ony about 12 miles from where I will be. Thanks again Lastleg.....I'll let you know if I find anything!

Lastleg my dad and I have been researching about a place his dad took him years ago. His dad once lived on or near this place. The place you are speaking about sounds like what he remembers. My dad would really like to call you. Can I get your number?

Didn't notice how old this post was, but enjoyed reading it. Decided to make a day trip to Carter yesterday. The markers are all still there and in great shape. The old church bldg. didn't look that old. I read that the Red Dog Saloon was still there, but could not find it. Found an older bldging that I mistook for an old saloon. It was around the corner from the Post Office marker. A man working there said he was remodeling it for the owner. I told him that I was out detecting and he happened to be a hunter himself. We exchanged some stories of different hunts. He said he didn't mind if I hunted there. They had just hauled in a lot of fill dirt to cover all the dry grass that was there. I didn't stay to hunt, now I wished I had at least done a little. It was a great day trip and an interesting old site. I think someone else from this site went out there and didn't find much either. Wonder if anyone else found the saloon. dustbuster
