Permission on school property?

a friend of mine lives near a local school and sees some guy leaving a mess. he is still doing it. i would beat him. i still won't hunt with out perm. but i usually get it easy. must be my sweet nature. sometimes! it's better to get slapped a hundred times than never get permission at all!

In my area I go freely to the school yards. Typically there will be a posted sign saying no tresspassing after dark unless it is a sanctioned event or prior permission given. If people can take their golf clubs to do some driving or chipping, there is no reason you cannot metal detect. Their activity is more destructive than mine. Like other posters stated, once you start asking permission when it is unnecessary, that is when you start getting a lot of "no's". If the playground is open to the public, there shouldn't be any detecting issues.

DeKalb County GA has an law against any metal detecting on any public property. It started in Avondale Estates about 25 years ago, and spread like a cancer to the rest of the county. It was great county to hunt CW relics and coinshoot in, now you would probably need a bullet proof vest while detecting there anyway, it has gotten so rough. I've hunted school yards all over the rest of the state with no problems, and don't expect any, as I am Joe Q. Public, and pay my taxes, so the land actually belongs to me anyway - right?

I have never needed permission on a school, no one ever said a word to me, there was even a teachers meeting going on, and nothing was said. In the wood chips you'll be fine, no damage can happen. If your in the grass or dirt, it might be different. Just keep your holes really neat and fill your hole back in, if it looks bad, pull out some grass with your hand and sprinkle it over it to make it look better. The worse they can do is tell you to leave and never come back. However is there is a "No trespassing at any time" sign, it would be hard to not be busted, unless no one came to the school or no one cared. So I say go for it.
