If it ain't illegal, it's legal. Check the state/county/town parks websites.

I checked with my local (city and county) Parks and Recreation department and asked what are the rules involving it. I was told here that I was allowed to metal detect, but I cannot dig (go figure the irony). This is where thinking a little bit outside the box comes to play and having a pinpointer and giving up if its not on the surface will apply.

Go to your town web site and check park rules. If they do not say it is illegal to do then so it. It you start asking if ou can they will tell you no. So check the rules and you should be ok. I have never had a problem with any park that I have detected. Just make sure you cover your holes real good. Make sure you pratice on your lawn and to make it look like you can not see where you have dug. The more you dig the better you will get. If you have a problem with the dig on the grass. Take a piece of cloth with you and when you dig out your plug put it on your cloth then scoop out the loose dig and place that on the cloth also. When you find you target set the plug off and dump the loose dirt back into the hole then put the plug back in press it down with your foot and you proable will have a hard time telling where you have been. Good luck and happy hunting.....Matt

Most Parks and Recreations departments allow hunting in parks and around ball fields. They do not want digging on the playing surface because of feared injury to players.

Mlayers is right about bringing a towel or tray. If you keep your dig area real clean most park officials will appreciate the effort and may cast a blind eye. Go out to YouTube and watch some of the metal detecting videos people have put up. You'll see the technique some people have used and you'll get the idea. Most park officials don't want their parks looking like the final scene in Caddyshack; sadly a lot of detectorist do just that and screw it for the rest of us.

I wondered the same thing as well when I started metal detecting. I just went down to the police station and asked if they had any ordinance's against metal detecting and the Sherriff said No, but make sure you cover your holes and I said ok. Only was stopped by a city employee once and he asked how I was doing and I showed him my finds and he told me I was doing a very good job of filling in my holes and went on his way. I would like to also say it is very nice have a pinpointer and a screw driver handy to so when you get a coin target at let's say 1 to 2 inches you just locate it with the pinpointer and and use the screwdriver in a circular fashion to get the coin out. I only dig a plug if the target is 4 inches or deeper on the scale when I'm in pinpoint mode. Some people prefer to cut a square plug by cutting 3 sides of the square then flipping it back over on it's self but I find this to messy so I prefer to cut a circular plug about 4 inches in circumference. After you put the lose dirt and plug back in the hole and step on it you can barley tell you where even there. Good Luck And Happy Hunting!!!

Just hit it, and if someone says something just play dumb...atleast thats what I do, then again if it looks like a historical park, ask the ranger

IF there is no sign, or nothing on the sign that's there prohibiting it I detect it.
State parks here are a no~no(beach areas excepted), but city/county parks if not on the sign then it fair game.

If it isn't posted that it is illegal then I hunt it. I also use a pinpointer (DetectorPro Uniprobe) and the Ez-Dig-R II system, since they are no longer made a good long screwdriver will work. I first check to see the depth with a probe, if shallow I usually just work it out with a probe, if I do need to dig, the ez-dig-r shovel is only 1 1/4 inches wide, no sign of a hole is ever left after I pinch the sod back together. I have had park employes watch me then just turn and walk away because they see there is no real hole or sign of a hole when I finish...
