I think this would be a great idea. It would bring some good revenue in to help out these places. What you could is only release a few out for a couple weeks like hunting licenses. You would have to price them high enough so that you would only get the true die hard MDers out there. I would deff purchase one.

A lot of people say things on here, but guarantee if given the option they'd take that opportunity.

I'm sure they would. Most if it came down to it would buy the permit no matter the cost and get out there like Hoover vacuums as fast as they could and mop it up

Judging from amount of signatures received so far (2) you may be over optimistic....

If it was on a national ballot to vote for I would vote no...Its a mute point, no way will they ever allow it or even consider it...

Just my opinion...

Why stop at the National Park level.. Think big

Go for the National Cemeteries too, after all, most of those fallen were buried in their uniform.

Sad, I guess some people just have no respect

Ok Ronnie McMillan sr. I have fought for this country and served and protected the communities after that so let's talk about respect. You have no clue and are so off base with your remarks. Every relic hunter is the same. You go out to retrieve relics be it war or colonial or whatever and you don't know 100% what went on where you are detecting but yet you still go out to find artifacts. I'm not the type of hunter that goes out to detect civil war relics and just throws them in a box after I find them. I build shadow boxes and place my finds in them and write a detailed story and location of when, where, and how these were found and from what period. That way one day I can look back and my children and grandchildren can have hands on experience about what was used and what people owned back then. Otherwise it would just be pages in a book that no one can actually hold or see.

As far as viewing artifacts, if I'm not mistaken we have museums for that

So in essence you're saying that because you're a vet and fought for this country you have the right to dig up possible grave sites at these parks. You appeared to be well versed in history, so perhaps you can enlighten me as to how many still lie in these parks.

I'm also curious where you get your detailed story from :icon_scratch: Unless it's a story how you walked around until you heard a beep and then started digging.

Yes it's great to be able to hunt historic relics and own a piece of history, but why not try that on private land that abuts the parks and leave the dead in peace.

U think theres not more than likely dead on private property. Pretty sure there was fighting on what is private owned land.

There may well be many dead on private property too, especially those wounded that were taken from the front. Then again I'm sure they are a heck of a lot less in those areas than on the actual battlefield.

There is dead people everywhere. At one point in time in the history of the us someone has surely died on one piece of property or another. You can't say for sure they haven't but also you also got to remember most were taken off by the funeral guys after the battle was over to be buried elsewhere.

My grandpa died in his back yard. You think I'm not going to metal detect that. I have a detecting buddy who owns property that was once a major hotel built in the woods during prohibition. They served alcohol and had gambling. Several people died there plus when his parents got older and passed away they were buried there. We still detect it. But don't go near the graves

But don't go near the graves

Exactly my point. Although many bodies were removed from battlefields, score after score were buried in mass graves. There is no way on knowing where those are at this point, so I would just leave them be.

As far as your grandpa goes, he died in his backyard, but he wasn't buried there.. Big difference

I would love to detect a park, but then again, I will let the dead rest in peace. I think most people in general feel this way, showing some respect for the buried.

I have respect for the dead. But like I had said there are places in a battlefield that are almost certainly not grave sites or mass graves. I know down here there are several places that aren't necessarily right on the battlefield but pretty much a staging area for troops and campsites right off the field. Those would be good places to look

Look, I know what you mean and feel your pain. Trust me, I'd love to do it too, but it's just not right.

Before you know it people will be scampering everywhere and anywhere to try and find something, it's human nature

Even if u were detecting in the battle field ur chances of hitting any evidence of bones is slim to none. It has been hundreds of years since those battles, most bones will be decomposed by now. Id still pay good money for a permit to hunt Gettysburg.
