I found this in a civil war trash pit. This field has been deep plowed though and I do occasionally find modern trash down with the good stuff. There was plenty of melted lead, ash, broken glass, & nails in this hole. Got a handful of relics too. And I dug this thing. It appears to be some sort of filter. And someone suggested a grease cup and it does look a lot alike one but this is pewter. And it's one piece. There is no seams and the screen looks as if it were cast into it. Now I do realize it could be modern but it was right in with this other trash in the pit. Any ideas?

Mike.. being a civil war hut/trash site digger I have never dug anything like this in a hut or trash pit, but i have dug a few of these before in civil war camps just free roaming and never took the time to figure out what they were or even sat there for a minute after i dug it because it looks modern, though when you get down deep into a hutsite that is never been dug out before it is very rare to find modern stuff inside with the relics though it can happen and normally it will be post civil war trash from about 1870-1930, I hope someone does know, I been watching for an answer myself! Good luck in those huts
