Photos: My New House

I was able to take a few cell phone photos of my new house during inspection, the inspection was four hours long. He said it was in very good condition for it's age, and average out of all the houses he does in general. The only problem was the basement, which is being taken care of right now, before we move in. I also noticed a beautiful stream running in the far part of the backyard, and a small pond. The photos are of the original section of the house, built in the 1770's, the back of the barn (the barn was built between 1790 and 1820), and the wide pine floors upstairs. There is also an 1800's shed on the property that will get completely restored when we move in.

I like the half windows on the top floor, I have never seen another house like that, it adds a lot of character. I was told it was an attic at first, and converted to bedrooms in the 1800's. The owners love history, and bought another colonial home, abandoned for five years, hoping to renovate it. They are going to tell me the history when they meet with me, having told them I was interested and trying to trace it for myself.

Cool looking house. Is this the one that the lender was suspicious of your small deposit from your finds melt? Looks like it was worth the hassle.

Two acres, all of it grass, not many neighbors nearby and lots of woods behind the house. On a historic aerial image of the land from the 1960's, the house had around 40 acres of farmland. We only have one horse and 6 goats (going to get more goats though), two acres and a huge barn is enough. It is very hard to find a house with huge chunks of land anymore in very old towns, so two acres seems pretty good. My current house only has .3 acres, and you can see eight or nine neighbors from the backyard. I have had to board my horse half an hour away, luckily there is room for the goats though (who prefer to lay on a patch of grass half the day or stand doing nothing in front of the backdoor looking for people).

The barn is attached to the house and very big, we are going to get the barn restored, keeping everything looking original, including the wide plank pine floors.

I forgot to take photos of the stream as it goes through the grass of the yard, or deleted them off my phone for space. I will try to take some photos next time I am there, next week. The stream-bed is very deep in the grass in the backyard, having been running since at least the 1850's according to a map, it is also more refined and narrow than it is in the woods.

I also fell in love at first sight of the house, along with three or four other people offering . I feel blessed to have been able to get it, it is hard to come across homes with such character. The inside is amazing too, I don't have any good photos. The heat from the fireplace is insane and the whole house is bright and sunny inside because of windows everywhere. In the kitchen is a working 18th century fireplace and beehive stove, it also has exposed pine beams.

As far as I know the shutters and storm door are original to the house, the windows are from at-least the late 1800's. The inspector recommends that I replace the windows, but if they lasted this long, why would they stop working now?

It closes next Friday, but the owners requested an extra month to live there, paying one month's rent. The house they bought, apparently abandoned for three to five years, is not fit to live in yet (they have two very young children), they are waiting for the contractors to make it safe and livable. I guess the extra month is not a bad thing considering that we have spent everyday since we bought the new house putting stuff we don't need in a PODS container, and still aren't even ready to list the house.

I found the privy for my current house, built in late 1800's, and recovered close to 100 late 1800's bottles. It would be insane if I found one from the 1700 there!
