✅ SOLVED Picture locket?anyway to tell its age?

Found this at a place that was supposed to have been a old school house a long time ago,but there is no record that I could find that states when.It is a locket of some kind.I guess for a picture but not sure how they would have gotten one in there?.It looks like it might have had glass over the hole on the front.I am thinking maybe a teacher lost it being that it is a book.Just looking to find out what kind of locket it is,and if possible what period it might be from?

Looks religious (like a bible). Possibly a reliquary? Design appears to be late 1800s.

Thanks,that does help.I imagine it might have had a picture of Jesus or someone encased in it when it was made because it doesn't open.As far as I know most picture lockets open?
