As I promised in my intro the other day, I am starting to post items I have obtained recently. They come from a family friend, ex diplomat, who passed away. It is a collection of mostly Mesoamerican artifacts he obtained in the 50's in Mexico. That is all I know of the provenance, unfortunately not even Pepperidge farm remembers.
I do Mediterranean archaeology, so I know what to look at, but I know close to nothing about this kind of material. So I would like to ask for your help. I will post the items with detailed pictures one by one in the next days. You might have an urge to shoot all the answers right away, but please, hold
The items I won't go into are at the bottom - a Burmese smoking pipe, museum replica of a Greek geometric lamp, and a deteriorated, low quality, grave good Roman oil lamp.
For your pleasure, the scale is metric. In case anyone wonders, they are not for sale.
The first item should be easy. It should be an Aztec smoking pipe. Is precise dating, or place of origin, possible to say? I could only find a range of 14-16. c.
