Piece of coral

While blowing holes I came across this piece of coral burried about 5 feet under the sand and totally dead. What made it intestering was the fact that there is an square hold apparently cut in it approximatly 1 inch by 1 inch all the way thru. I have seen alot of coral here but never any natural coral with a 90 degree angle much less 4 of them

Would love to unfortunatly my camera died so it may be a while. A couple of questions I cant seem to find Chat, I used to have it bookmarked but my computer got everything wiped and I cant find it on the main page. Does the coral react to a metal detector? Possibly a metalic object encrusted within?

The coral probably formed around whatever the object was that filled the hole. Cool stuff.

Coral is mostly calcium and after so many years underwater, it becomes magnetic. Chagy told me that.

Nope doesnt react to a detector at all. For all I know it could be a fluke of nature.

Could a iron square post have been below and coral grew around it, or was forced through the coral, then disintegrated bit by bit from the environment?
