Pieces of old farm equipment around caches?

I have always heard that Jesse James marked there hidden caches with pieces of iron like farm equipment. Does anyone know if this is true or not? I have heard that with a compass they could find these old iron pieces that were not buried very deep. If anyone knows if this is true or false I would like to know, thanks.
I am a new Hunter and have read a lot, but would like to know if that part is true.

What we think of as old iron farm equipment was new in J.J. s time and a valuable tool, not likely to be left laying around for very long.
