I worked for several weeks to get permission to MD at a virgin privately owned beach on the lake. It is open to the public for swimming, but closed to metal detecting. Excited that I finally got the OK, I was there the next day at the tail end of a heavy Nor’Easter rainstorm. As it turned out I found only 66 cents. The beach had obviously been hunted hard by someone who did not even fill in all their holes.
Not to be discouraged I was off the next day to the beach to see what the heavy rains washed out of the dunes. I found $4.79, 1 Euro and 1 foreign coin of unknown age and origin, but with oriental characters on it. About 20 feet from the oriental coin I pulled the glint of gold from the heavy wet sand. I didn’t look at the gold dagger closely, just quickly slipped it into my inside coat pocket since several people were in the area walking the beach. An oriental coin and a golden dagger. …. Was I at the edge of a sunken treasure find
??
Well, after getting alone on the beach, the golden dagger turned into brass and you could still see a piece of the torn off price tag on the back. So much for the pirates treasure theory, but a cool find none the less. A dime is shown with the letter opener for scale. The modern day letter opener is about 8 inches long and I think the handle is either a rabbit or a goat. Perhaps one of the symbols from the Chinese calendar?
Happy hunting to you’al.
