pit mining vs shaft mining.

could some one explain why they would choose one over the other?

Sinking a shaft,running drifts are inherently more dangerous ..less cost effective,less production in most cases.

If there is a large deposit of low grade ore, they generally open pit it. If there is a small vein of high grade ore, they go under ground.

The cost of underground mining, the knowledge required, plus MANY more
government regulations that go along with it, are some of the reasons open
pit mining is (if possible) preferred, by both small & large operators.
