I have been finding a lot of newer memorial pennies that are so pitted that you sometimes can't even see the date...what's with that....acid rain?

nope --since 1983 the cents are basically zinc slugs with a thin copper coating on them --once the coat breaks down the zinc core rots away rapidly --thats why we got "cancer eatten cents
