We all have dug wheat pennies from time to time,
These (for the most part) cruddy copper coins that you can almost not see a date on, are they worth anything more than the copper they are made of ?
Asking for a friend 🤣

I'm really referring to Wheat Cents not memorials, are they worth 3 cents ONLY ? or somehow more ?

Wheat cents in poor shape (damaged, dates unreadable) are worth scrap copper value. The premium prices come into play based on condition and rarity.

If you clean them up some at times coin dealers will give you a little more for them.

I like to do a little google on the ones I find if I can see a date and mint mark. So far the same answer every time, something along the lines of millions of these were minted that year and aren’t particularly valuable outside of certain errors.

I’m seeing buyers on Craigslist paying at least 4 cents each for wheats. I have a few thousand that I’ve dug, found roll hunting, or in change. My largest haul was 52 rolls of solid wheats at one of my Credit Unions. Was a collection dump with many reds and all rolls categorized by date. If I were to sell I’d probably keep everything pre-1935 as those dates bring in a some numismatic interest and can command better prices.

To clarify, I look for Civil war and Colonial period items, but age has gotten to me so I hardly go out anymore.

My guess: the Craigslist buyer is going to wrap them in rolls and sell them as rolls of wheat pennies. Leading one to think “unsearched”.

For only 4 cents each? Never have seen that on Craigslist but definitely eBay. At only $2/roll you shouldn’t expect a 1909 S VDB but you just never know.
