Placer / El Dorado County Info

So you local guys, can you give me the skinny on the wild & scenic portions of Placer and/or El Dorado Counties? Where do they start/end? Also what's the story with the Rubicon River? is there any gold there? Wild & Scenic?

On the maps, some areas are pretty obvious, but on other areas, its not so obvious. T/R/S start and ends would be good.

Appreciate any info.

Minnerrick here is a youtube video of Professor George Wheeldon who was into all things gold, giving a talk to the jeepers jamboree about the Rubicon and Motherlode gold. I took his geological mining history of the motherlode class at Folsom College a few years ago and he discusses some of those concepts in the video along with accretions zones, faults and the Sierra geological history. Unfortunately due to age he taught his last mining history class last year. He is approximately 80 years old in this video. Hope this helps.

Land Matters is working on a mapping system to add all of the Wild, Scenic and Recreational River designation boundaries to the Land Status maps.

If you have a question about a particular boundary I might be able to provide you with coordinates or even a map. If you are looking for the information in general you will probably have to wait until Land Matters completes their project.

Wild and scenic starts above mineral bar bridge in North fork american, not sure where it ends but it's the majority of the river from there up. Asra ends below mineral bar bridge and at the Oxbow reservoir on the middle fork.

There is gold on the Rubicon but access is very limited on that section of river .

Well it took a while but Land Matters now has the beginnings of a national Wild, Scenic and Recreational Rivers Map.

This is one of Land Matters New Project maps so it's not quite ready for prime time but you can look it over and give Land Matters a hand by telling us what you would like to see on these map layers. Once the project is complete the Wild and Scenic map layers can be included on other maps.

There are three designations possible under the Wild and Scenic Act that created these river classes. Only the Wild segments typically restrict prospecting methods so it's important to understand the distinctions. We've made it easier to figure out just what restrictions there might be by including a link to the Public Law that established each section of each river.

Since 1968, there have been 209 Wild and Scenic River Designations that cover almost 13,000 miles of river. The most recent being in August of 2018 for 20 miles on East Rosebud Creek in Montana.

Take a look at the Wild and Scenic Project Map to see where they are located. The map also includes eight designated Study Rivers. Click for information on a Wild and Scenic River and the results window will return a link to the Public Law that designated the river. We also have many Wild and Scenic River Management Plans in the Land Matters Library.

Land Matters will soon be putting up more of these map projects we've been working on so you can see, and help guide, where Land Matters puts it's efforts in the future.
