Hello Sports fans... oh wait.. that's Harry Carey's line.. Well howdy everyone just the same. As I sit and type this in this fine Sunday evening it's blowing up a storm outside here in Lexington Kentucky. LITTERALLY ! It's making a stormy end to an otherwise fantastic day. I won't go into the fact that the local weathermen are predicting SNOW tomorrow.. after two days in the 70's here locally. *SIGH* I have to just remember.. this is Kentucky, the crossroads of the continental weather systems. Don't mind the weather, stick around a few minutes, it'll change.
Yesterday morning we had frost on the flowers and grass and windshields, but by noon it was pushing 72 degrees, bright sunny and mild. This morning it wasn't quite so chilly to begin with, but the day otherwise turned out the same. I rose early (for a weekend morning) and made breakfast for my wife and I. We enjoyed a leisurely repast and then read the Sunday paper. The birds singing as the sun rose over the backyard fence. No traffic to speak of on our street out in front of the house. I overlooked the pruning and spring cleaning I've been meaning to get to in the back yard and sweet talked my sweetest into going detecting with me! Of course the lure of shopping later might have had something to do with her agreeing so readily. Hey, whatever works I guess.
Today's venue for my metal detecting adventure(s) were more School playgrounds. I'd thought about hitting a couple of the local park Tot lots, but the sun was up and the kiddies would not be long in overpopulating the playgrounds... and I really wasn't up to playing the Pied Piper today. So School playgrounds it was. Being a Sunday morning, not many of the school playgrounds would likely be inhabited by the darling quislings.. only their droppings. Hmmm.. that doesn't sound very attractive now does it? "Leavings" perhaps? Nuh-uh.. not that either.. How 'bout "things they've lost" ? Yeah, that's what I was looking for. <laughing>
My first playground was just a couple of blocks from my house, I usually hit this school several times a year, but it was the first time this calendar year, and I was not disappointed. I found the usual Pencil tops and pull tabs of course, lots of lost pennies, more nickels than I'd anticipated TO BE SURE!, but lots of dimes too. Nothing really spectacular to relate about found here though, just a couple of dollars in clad.. not bad.
The second playground for the day was at another Elementary School a few miles away. Here again were the usual suspects, pull tabs.. PENCIL TOPS.. pennies and dimes.. oh and a nice handfull of quarters.. always nice to find! Oh and there was one big really ugly (plain) earring. Looks like gold, but it's not stamped or marked in any way, so it's most likely "junque". I found one little bead earring with a silver wire though. It looks like a pearl but feels like glass.
The Third and final School for the day was the location of my oddest find of the day. More usual clad and crap, but then there was this big hit that came up with this oddity from the far east. HONG KONG ("King Kong") . A five dollar coin. COOL!

You can see the size comparison, just a little bigger than a US Quarter, but about thrice as thick, the edge is neat too, check it out..

Aside from a short, couple of hours, trip into the Land Of the Great White North (Canada) many years ago, I've never set foot out of my own country. I've not traveled extensively to be sure! So when I find foreign coins close to home I marvel at how far they've traveled for me to find them with my little metal detector. <grin> Hong Kong is quite a ways from here, I've got to wonder about the story behind that little trek. Anyway, it was my cool find for the day, or rather one of them. As I was walking back to my car from the playground I got a strong signal. I stopped and investigated, and dug. It was a neckerchief slide. A WEBLOS slide I think.. I had one many many years ago. Some scout lost his slide and I found it however many years later.. it was a good three inches or more down in the dirt under the grass. You can see it here along with the other playgrounds "plenty" for the day.. including the cat pendant I'd forgotten to mention, and someones house key, and all the metal buttons and zipper pulls that migrate to the woodchips.

The last location I hunted today (this morning) was in the nearby town of Versailles Kentucky (just down the road a bit.) We drove past Keenland Race course on our way the Versailles. The Spring Meet (horse racing) is in session and the grounds are packed with parked cars and all the stuff and trash that people "lose" out of their pockets and cars and whatever. *Sigh* I need to find out who to ask permission of to be able to get in there and detect the grounds were all the "additional" parking takes place during the racing meets. AFTER the Meets are over of course. Anyway, back to today's metal detecting. To Versailles we drove.. for detecting, and for lunch afterwards, and for shopping after that. The place I like to detect in Versailles is the HUGE Soccer Park. Ahh Springtime.. the weather is warming, the grass is growing, and the balls are flying.. Uh.. Soccer balls that is. <blushing> The soccer leagues are gearing up and games are already in progress, as well as practices of course.
I pretty much stayed to the sidelines of the pitches today but that was fine, I was finding all kinds of clad. Lots of quarters, lots of dimes, and more nickels! The usual can slaw and pull tabs were in abundance as well, of course, but I didn't mind at all. I found a couple of older coins at the soccer park too. One 1958 nickel, and one 1956 D Wheat penny. Cool..

As the sun got closer to being overhead, and the lunchtime hour (noon) approached I called it a day for my metal detecting. My sweety was getting a little fidgety and had already had too much sun.. Oooh that's going to feel good tonight.. <grimace>
We had lunch, then did that shopping I'd mentioned. Picked up some new cushions for our backyard swing so that we might enjoy the weather this afternoon and evening as I grilled our dinner on the back porch barbeque. That and my dearest could watch me do some of that pruning I'd mentioned that I'd put off too long already. Oh, not to worry, I took lots of breaks. <grin>
I went through my finds bag later and sorted and cleaned and counted. WOW! a REALLY nice day indeed! Goodies, Oddities, and LOTS of CLAD! More change for the Vacation Fund, it's growing nicely.

Yessir! I think I could call today a VERY GOOD day indeed! I hope you all got out, or will get to GET OUT and enjoy our hobby too. Although, I hope the weather is better wherever you're at than it is at my house as I type this in.. Not to worry though, the Tornado Watch has now been downgraded to a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. Not so much thunder outside now as when I began typing, but I still see some flashes of lightning so I'm going to wrap this up now and get off of here. Don't need to get my computer zapped. OR ME. <grin> As always...

The metal detecting was a blast... as always... but the time spent with my darling wife really made it a wonderful day. Even if it DID involve some... <shuddering> Shh shhh shopping.

looks like the clad just jumped
into your goodies bag frodov..

Well I wouldn't say that they just juped into my goddies bag.. 162 coins dug up Sunday.. DUG.. and my back is telling me all about it, all day long today. That's only 162 targets that turned out to be coins.. there were lots of other targets too, probably stooped down and dug well over 230 targets Sunday. But hey! I'm not complaining, even if my back muscles are. <grin> I had a blast!

I have found that A LOT of hoop and/or earrings in general DO NOT have stamped gold.KT or jewelers mark, but are real!
