I've been with the same business (which will remain anonymous) for 20 years. I know everything about this business. Well, two weeks ago I found out my boss (also of 20 years) sold it. :o The new owners know nothing about the biz so they're keeping me. Got a severance, a raise with the new guy, all good. It certainly could've been worse!

My problem is, all my friends who have been with me for a good chunk of the 20 years are all gone. They all have great prospects for other jobs so they're not worried about their future.

As I sit here, I'm completely alone (the new owners are out of state for a few days). All the daily discussions with my friends, all the jokes, the laughter, the joys, the frustrations, everything, has stopped. The silence is eerie. Sure we'll stay in touch, but it's not the same. I've lost familiarity.

If I wasn't a raging sentimentalist this probably wouldn't bother me so much. As I walk around everything reminds me of the "old times": abandoned coffee cups in the break room, pictures we hung, saved ketchup packets that were never used, and on and on. It's all terribly sad. We had some great times...

I feel the "new crew" will pale in comparison but I've got to give them a chance.

Thanks for reading everybody. At least you all haven't left me!

hi,immy. sorry for your loss. i have been thru that. keep a cheery attitude and you will be a hit with the new crew. it is so hard to change after so long. show your new boss you know the business in and out. they will like that. but be suttle. Bill

Re: Please cheer me up...

Immy,
I know what you are going thru... been there...But one of the things I've done with new crews, is start off very positive and tell them how great the job is going to be, and MAN are we going to create some GREAT times !!! Then just dive in... You will still think about your friends and you know what... they're still and always will be your friends. It's just time to make new ones. If you're a manager ( and I'm sure you are ), all ya got to do is dig deep and create some fun times, and I know for you it's going to be tuff... If you don't the new people will pick up on your feelings and it may cause some misunderstanding with how you are... Be the light.. shine bright... and people will want to be with you...

Re: Please cheer me up...

You are stuck with us! I know what it is like to go such huge changes and I certainly feel for ya but do your best to keep a positive attitude with the new crew, sounds like you are trying, hang in there....you will find some great folks on the new crew as well and start making new memories!

Life is an adventure.

I know this is a cliche but when one door closes, a window opens. I sense something good coming your way from the change. :angel1: :angel1:

Re: Please cheer me up...

I will be praying for you and like was said

WE ARE ALWAYS HERE FOR YOU MY FRIEND

:)

Re: Please cheer me up...

Your bound to feel down right now. That is a lot of changes you have had tossed at you. The new crew are probably scared to death of you!
Smile even when you don't feel like it. Compliment some who are doing a good job......before you know it your "new crew" will be "your crew".
I'll be praying for you.

Re: Please cheer me up...

Similar thing happened to me when I retired from the firehouse.
Miss the hell out of my co-workers as we spent more time together than my regular family.
Now we get together in the fall each year for a salmon fishing/camping trip.
Good luck to you, things will turn out fine.

Mike

Re: Please cheer me up Updated)

Thanks everyone for helping me out with your good thoughts. They were needed and deeply appreciated. Thought I'd pass along an update.

It's been a good news/bad news scenario. Firstly, two of my friends were hired back so we had some semblence of the "old crew," but for the most part the first several weeks were chaotic. Then we got to "organized chaos" for awhile and finally to where we are now, which is a pretty efficient team. We're even eclipsing the numbers the "old biz" was doing. Things are good.

So naturally, now's the time for my new boss to throw a monkey wrench into the whole thing. He had me lay off two people, one of them my friend of 7 years. ::) Oh great! Don't know how people have the stomach to do this. Just last week we were saying how lucky we were that we haven't been touched by this recession and now this. Our really busy season starts in January so hopefully they'll come back, but I wouldn't begrudge them turning down the offer.

So that's the latest. Those of you who said I'd get used to the new crew were right on. Thanks for the wise words. It's a tough year to say it, but I hope everyone has a great Christmas and better 2009!

I know it will all work out ok! I hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!
I quit a job in 07 and had another waiting so 1 year later they came and fired me goin put someone at a cheaper rate in. But I had a feeling about it and had prayed really hard its been 2 monthes and no regular paying job but I am subing at the schools so its something and if there is a school I dont want to go to thats ok! Cause they need them all the time (Flu ) season! But it is true a door never shuts with out GOD opening a window!
