I've been with the same business (which will remain anonymous) for 20 years. I know everything about this business. Well, two weeks ago I found out my boss (also of 20 years) sold it.
The new owners know nothing about the biz so they're keeping me. Got a severance, a raise with the new guy, all good. It certainly could've been worse!
My problem is, all my friends who have been with me for a good chunk of the 20 years are all gone. They all have great prospects for other jobs so they're not worried about their future.
As I sit here, I'm completely alone (the new owners are out of state for a few days). All the daily discussions with my friends, all the jokes, the laughter, the joys, the frustrations, everything, has stopped. The silence is eerie. Sure we'll stay in touch, but it's not the same. I've lost familiarity.
If I wasn't a raging sentimentalist this probably wouldn't bother me so much. As I walk around everything reminds me of the "old times": abandoned coffee cups in the break room, pictures we hung, saved ketchup packets that were never used, and on and on. It's all terribly sad. We had some great times...
I feel the "new crew" will pale in comparison but I've got to give them a chance.
Thanks for reading everybody. At least you all haven't left me!
