Greetings folks!

Can anyone identify this item I recently found metal detecting? MY guess is it’s a brass sabot from a cannon round. It was found approx 30’ from where a buddy dug a GREAT shenkyl shell fuse. The area is known for being the location of a small artillery duel. Item appears to have rifling to the outside band. Heavy in weight, definitely not lead.

Thoughts anyone? Thanks in advance. 3A9E580D-2920-4447-8D07-B2CDCC6CBE0A.jpeg 55B50DB6-823D-4639-B985-607CAFC458CB.jpeg A5A54FA9-32F4-4AE7-8B90-B5A60594C50D.jpeg 2C1B7B22-834C-4FBE-8A35-4FC59CA15836.jpeg

It is indeed a piece of the sabot from a civil war artillery shell. More specifically, it is a piece of the copper ring sabot from a Confederate Read artillery shell. It shows enough rifling-grooves on it for me to be able to tell you it was fired from a Confederate-made 3"-caliber Rifled cannon.

Just for my curiosity... where did you dig it? Also, do you know when that artillery duel was fought?
