Oh my. Here I thought we were going to discuss "Pocket Gold". About 10 years ago I posted a discussion on "Pocket Gold". Here in Southern Oregon there have been some great discoveries. So here is some info on the subject...as told to me by an old time miner named Glen Young who had a cabin up off of Steve's Fork on the Applegate Drainage system. (Gold Country). Glen was 84 at the time he told me this in 1974.

Pocket gold discoveries had become a real science for Glen. He was an engineer who left society and built a cabin and placer mined all his life. He said: What you want to do is go up on a mountainside/hillside above a stream showing some colors. One must realize that in Oregon the Mtns are covered with timber and humus matter. You take a short handled shovel and dig down the length of the shovel. You take a measured quantity of the dirt/material at the bottom of your hole. You bag/label it and place a numbered marker at the spot. You quadrant off a large area and repeat the task at each spot.

You go back to camp and pan off each sample of material......saving the black sand. After you do this with each sample you measure and weigh the black sand from each location. When you are done doing all this you can identify a location to further prospect for "pocket gold". In Southern Oregon a lot of these locations could be identified as: (what is called cayote holes in Az).

Glen told me of one story where such a dig occurred....and a pocket of quartz was found. The quartz did not bear any gold values. It sat empty for a long time. One year he went back to check it out and the ceiling had fallen in and the material was laidened with pocket gold. There was no visible vein....simply a pocket.

So there you go....no rear pocket in a pair of jeans....no old flat butt...merely a gold story worthy of thought.

Black sand associated with pocket gold?? Most places in the Siskiyou's where pocket gold is found, you couldn’t dig down the depth of a short handled shovel..respectfully I think maybe you misunderstood what he was telling you. Most of the pocket gold is found in oxidized bedrock, which is found at or very near the surface and I’ve never found any black sands other than concentrated in the creek and river beds.

However I’m no old timer..and I’d love to have heard exactly what he was trying to tell you.

Thanks for that vision...coming back to an audit and seeing gold plastered on the ceiling where there was none before.

Pocket gold to me, comes from a pocket of gold from a quartz seam like this picture.

I didn't watch the thread starters video and after seeing your guys thoughts on it, I have no plans too...lol. I have a pocket mine and my family has had many pocket mines in Northern Cal like the Lukens Mine in Pilot Hill, the Morning Glory, Kate Hardy, Yellow Jacket, Liberty, 16 to 1 and the old Mammoth Mine in and around Alhegany California. You follow a quartz seam into the mountain and I've seen a wall of gold appear after blasting along the same seam in this video in our mine, unfortunately though no picks of it in the seam of my own. If you look thru my prospecting album on here, I have plenty of our pocket gold pics from the mine in the album.

Asmbandits, only if you react or take it that way (assuming the worst instead of interacting and getting a feel for what people are trying to convey via short written comments). Sure people can respond by posting “nice vid”..or click the meaningless “like” button. In my opinion..unless something is directly insulting or rude, it’s better to not assume the worst...if people are actually trying to be salty..it will probably be very obvious.

If your referring to my clickbait comment...clickbait is a business model practice in YouTube. Every channel does it...misleading titles and thumbnails. I’m pretty confident in this case it was a joke...? Maybe I’m out of touch?

I think we have all made positive comments on past videos, why would we suddenly be jack donkeys? I really like all of the videos that the OP has posted. Real detecting.

Don’t look for the worst...in fact ignore the negative and absorb the positive. It’s all about perspective.

It just sounded like your old timer was chasing black sand as an indicator of a pocket load deposit, which I’ve never heard of before.
