My local police station was built on a historical site from the 1850's, and I had the thought to try and gain permission to search the grounds, hopefully without getting shot or tackled. I figured, they can't arrest me for asking! To my surprise, the deputy director got back with me and game me the go ahead! The only stipulation is that I have to establish an exact time frame, and allow them to take pictures of the items I find for their interoffice newsletter. I'll be packing up and heading there within the hour!

It never hurts to ask for permission, even in the unlikeliest of places.

cool

When I saw the Title I was going to say
If your Town is Small town, you'll probably get a Yes.
I'm glad to hear it worked out. keep us posted.

Well I made it back alive, and discovered that my local police department is hilarious. The director who gave me permission (who I only talked to on the phone) ran outside screaming that I was trespassing, destroying property, and that I was under arrest. Luckily he is just a prankster messing with me..

No silver to be had, but I'm pretty excited that I broke my record for old coins by 40 years, with an 1865 IH penny, in decent shape!

Nice find Silver Simon!

If that was an official Historical site, they may have given permission that they didn't have the authority to give. Good thing they are the ones that do the citing and arresting! That Indian looks like it was hardly in circulation before it was lost.

Now that you have a Connection Go Back and Hunt that area Hard and Slow!! If you can find That there is More there or Very Close Buy, also look for more areas that they Might Have to Hunt!!! Im Thinking If you work it Right You Could Hunt the Local Court House!!!! Think about It!!! Where they Get Married They Also Get Divorced Angry People Like to Throw Things Including Rings!!! OOPS Chug

I am not aware if it is "officially" a historical site, it was the home of a famous local politician in 1850, indicated by a nice sign in the yard. Either way, I suppose I was covered legally.

Id say that sign indicates its registered as a historical site. Congrats on hunting, but don't be surprised if you're asked to stop

When you are showing them your finds, you might mention to them that you would be willing to help them with crime scene searches. I have helped authorities in two states solve a couple of homicides by finding bullets and casings at shooting scenes. Just a thought...it would open the door to many other sites. Cops will tell you things about the local history and old places once they learn to trust you.

Very nice find Simon. How deep was the IH?

HH,

Pete

Remember the ground was here before the people built the police station and no telling who might have lost something anywhere.

I agree with Tonto, it never hurts to offer your help. I have worked with some of the local authorities up here and you would be surprised how " human" they really are.
