I've been using my EX II for several months, mostly in Smart search mode (Factory Setting) and then cranking up the automatic sensitivity if conditions permit. I have found items, but not deep. So I now am trying to take the sensitivity off of automatic and that is where the music begins. At this same time I am experimenting with the Iron Mask, taking to -11 to -16. By modifying both my machine becomes quite unmanagable in trashy areas. Now I realize that one must work slowly. In the past I went at a faster pace. I see the advantage of the new settings once you have a area defined that has potential. I have questions from this point. Do the good coins (older and deeper) register in the same areas as previous. Or do they start to look more like iron. What is the point of diminishing returns on Iron Mask for depth. If so.....I will need to dig alot of trash. I would hope that is not the case. THAT is one of my major questions. I have little success (luck?) in finding silver lately. I realize that you have to walk over it but, I do believe that my skills need to be refined.

Even the deep ones i have found have registered close to where they should read.Trashy ares are defineately better to hunt slow.
Try using all metal mode, clear the screen in iron mask, and use ferrous tones. The iron targets will make low blat sounding tones and better targets including nickles will make a high pitched sound.
The problem i have with all metal is that i dug more trash because if it sounds partialy good i dig it.
And hunting in a trahy area and lowering your iron mask will probably make it a little harder to hunt.
i have not had a good year on silver either..as you said you have to walk where it is at...
Hope this helps...

Re: Poll on Minelab EX II Settings.....Threshold????

I have been manually turning up the sensitivity to 24-30 range and the threshold dissapears. I still get hits on items, the screen ID does not do well. I will the go to automatic to hear the threshold, but feel I give up an inch or two on depth. Again, this all require slow movement, which I am trying to adhere to. Does losing the threshold create a problem? That is my question for today.

Thanks for you help

Mr. Mojo. by running your machine on minus 16 you would be picking up all sorts of rubbish .Set it on minus 6 and use the standard coins discrimination pattern. Get yourself Mastering the Minelab Explorer XS & S by Andy Sabisch.Whilst the book is for the previous Explorer model its information still applies to the Explorer 2. It sounds to me that you are detecting highly mineralised ground, when you run in auto the machine automatically lowers its power to compensate for the ground conditions. Where as in manual sensitivity when you turn it up it is running at what ever setting you have set it to, if it is too high on mineralised ground in minus16 the threshold will be affected. Turn it down until you stop getting false signals and threshold stablizes.Using the machine in manual sensitivity will give you more depth but dont use too higher settings, that cause the machine to run erraticly. Another tip is if you are using higher settings make sure your coil height on your swing is kept consistent otherwise you will get false signals. Settings, coin pattern, gain 9, audio 1, minus 6 iron mask, deep, fast(if in rubbishy area) threshold just audible(not silent). wellgood luck seeya Neilo ;D

I've played around a lot and in conductive I find -14 to be the best setting. I hunt the iron from Colonial period home sites and this setting will disc. nails with nothing more than a slight false, lets med. size iron break through one way, but usually the other is quiet, and big iron which I might dig hits from both directions. Haven't changed this in 4 years and know it very well.
