I think that you mean shaft abrader, and it does resemble one. Most abraders are usually made from a hard sandstone type of rock so it would gradually sand down to the shape that was wanted. Your rock appears to be granite, which would not be ldeal in sanding. It may still have been used in some other use. You may want to post your item in the American Indian Forum for more comprehensive replies.

How big is your rock? How wide are the grooves? It definitely looks manmade instead of natural. It could have been used for sharpening bone awls or ? Cool Find!

Could be a crude hatchet head ...native in origin...the marks were possibly made by the cord that attached it to the handle and worn into it over time?

I think you found a sinew scraper/shaper. I was just reading an article which stated that sandstone was most commonly used, but that harder stone was also used. I have one made of steatite(soapstone). Both sides of mine have been used for shaping/scraping

It almost looks that way, but, it seems to me, that with those groove locations and angles, you would end up cutting the attaching cord in normal use.
