Snow is starting to melt after last week's dump so I hit a corn field that looked promising. Late start and an early finish but still a couple decent finds! Brass era Chevy piece, an Indian Head penny with great patina, always a welcome find in the great white north.

Find of the day is the medallion which I'm having trouble identifying. Soldier looks like a union soldier...could it be a Civil war commemorative medallion? Thanks for looking!

Just looked up some acronyms. The UVL on the similar medal could stand for Union Veterans Legion

Hamilton Ontario had a G.A.R. post.
Some medallions were likely post specific...At least event/reunion specific.
I found mention of a joke when researching a post near me that went , "it's easier to get promoted after the war , than it was during the war."

Perhaps the better likeness tells the definitive tale!

I don't know if the Sons of the American revolution does it but the DAR picks out certain symbols for their conventions. The leadership will pick out a certain symbol of colonial life and they'll make and distribute a limited number of these pins for the attending delegates to the national convention. Extremely collectible as often daughters follow mothers into the org and keep their medallions as badges of continuity.
