The "devil's head thing" looks like a broken 20th-Century garter-clasp. Broken meaning the loop for attaching the clasp to the garter-strap is broken off. He's a photo showing an extremely similar, earlier one which was patented in 1895. It was found by our fellow TNet-er Thrillathahunt.

Looks like that's it. Mine doesn't have any lettering it seems but maybe a little extra toasted. When I picked it out of the dirt I thought something broke off but didn't see where it came from. I thought I had found a cellar hole nearby but its hard to tell.
