🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Possible mortar shell?

I was out near barstow, CA - Searching the lavic lake bed for jasper and came across this. I have no experience in identifying military items, if that's what this is, but looks similar to mortar shells I've seen online. Found less than 50ft from a railroad, incase that may have something to do with it. Item is 7" long and 2.5" wide at its widest and 1" wide at its thinnest, near the top. It's also not completely round near the tip. Appreciate the expertise.

As my posting name indicates, my specialty-area of relics is Historical Artillery projectiles. I'm 100% certain that your find is not any kind of those.

The hole in it appears to have been made by a cutting-torch... which is something you absolutely would not do to an artillery/mortar shell..

It,s too pointy to be a mortar shell,no fuse in the nose either.That being said,I have no idea!Is this any where near the big Marine Depot at Barstow?

It's about 40 miles east of the marine Corp logistics base. Not sure if that's the same as the marine depot

The same,50 years ago when I was a Marine it was called a depot.
