Hi Folks,
I made it out again today for a couple hours and this is what I found. The frozen ground is slowly starting to thaw away from the wall where I have been at, but not much. Sounds like we are getting another winter blast this week.
I was happy with the pottery, there is some more pieces I found, but have to wait until its thawed.
The large bone is the one that puzzles me the most...on the one end, it is very flat, looks like it was sawed or sharpened with a stone? Not sure why or how?
Any thoughts if that is a scraper?
And finally, some folks here have been asking to be on the lookout for seeds, maybe what I have is a seed, not sure? Definatly not a rock.
I also found quite a bit more crushed/burnt bone, shell and charcoal as well.
Thanks for looking and would really appreciate any thoughts!!!

Everything looks pretty good got some decent pottery and that definitely looks like some kind of flake tool IMO.

Thanks bsit,
Any thoughts on that bone I'm holding?

I wish I could help on that but bone does not last where I'm at. Not my area of expertise. But looks really old.

If that bone was found at the same level as everything else including the deer tooth.. just based on the thickness of the bone it would have been a fairly heavy animal and most likely a part of that deer. It's hard to judge from photos but if you believe that bone was altered it may have been a handle for some type of tool or blade. I have one for example. Does yours appear to have Polish where it was held if it were a handle?

Thanks Gator,
It does appear to be polished, it was found in the same hole as everything else, but a little deeper than most of the stuff. The one end is very flat, it looks like it was sawed or rubbed on a stone to get it that flat? You can see scratches across the flat all going the same direction.

That's interesting Because it sounds like saw marks. There is always the possibility that the shelter was occupied several times in different periods of time... and also Dug before you.... mixing everything up.

I tried a better camera and no flash to show the marks I was talking about, hope this helps

It wouldnt be the first time I have been wrong. But I read where they would take a graver type tool and carved a circle in the bone till it was close to the inside and then broke it straight. Is this possible to make it look like that? It does look like a handle and if it is they are a rare find. Should be a knife blade some place in that dirt if it was used for a handle. Nice find

What you explained is scoring and snapping. that would not leave lines running across the interior edge of the bone.

I suppose a stone could leave those marks.. but that looks like Saw Marks to me.. from a metal blade. I just so happen to have one of those also. This is leftovers from a meal at a second Seminole War fort.. 1835-1842

This is the edge of a bone handle made by Native Americans.

Thanks Guys,
If it were cut with a metal saw blade, the cutting marks should be wider in the middle and narrower at the thickest cross section.

Seed looks a lot like a choke cherry pit.
Lots of finds there!.

I've butchered and boned out dozens and dozens of deer myself, funny how I never paid much attention to the bone structure, other than where to make my cuts. I am sure I will next fall. I really learn a lot here, I was just thinking back on that coffin bone from last weekend.
Thank All,
