Possibly limestone. It looks like that red pottery we find here Rock. The other is a fabric pattern. They reverse that pattern and it shows how they weaved. Very cool. Snag this picture it is for your area also. Nice finds Rock!
...really nice frame rock! You have different kinds there...."fabric pattern" Tn said....don't think we have that here. I really like the pattern on the second row both ends, like one you gave me ...is it called something? Besides "pretty"...lol

Id have to look it up. Okay its called Lamar Bold Incised. Dates the Late Mississippian Period. Guessing 500 B.P.
I find all dates of pottery in that creek and even 2 pieces of stone bowls which is older than pottery.
Looks like a lug to me.. A handle in other words.
The colors on that one piece look like what is referred to as "cloud marks" it's the result of different levels of oxygen getting to the piece as it was being fired while buried.
Could be a handle I have found a piece with a handle attached already but it was square. I will have to ask my friend if he has any examples with the base intact. Maybe I can get a picture if he does. Thanks for the info GatorBoy it is interesting.
Update on the leg. These are some pics of bowl bases from my area. The 2 I have found are legs according to the person that found these bases. Mine are worn down by the creek tumbling and that is why they look like they do.
Just out of curiosity did any of the pots have lugs/handles in your area?
I'm not arguing with what your friend said just wondering if you looked at both.
Just reading up on some Georgia pottery.... man you should really check out the University of Georgia website.
They have a great section on native pottery
