How close is too close. I know I’m gonna want to tool around my backyard. I have power lines about 100 yards away.

What kind of power line, local or high voltage? You will know when your too close as detector will become unstable and noisy, turning sense down and noise cancel want correct it.

They are high voltage.
 
Treasure Hunter is right. And it depends on which machine you use. I've never had a problem with them.
 
i hunt a spot with a power station on it . most of the time no problem but every now and then it would pulsate to the point of unuseable nothing would help the Whites so i would use a garrett or a Tesoro , I would just swap brands .One of them would work....
 
When I'm using the XP DEUS and I encounter EMI which will cause a lot of chatter, I turn my sensitivity down to 85 and my frequency up to 17.5
That will silence the chatter.
 
I've never had any problem from any power line, with any machine at 100 yards... that is a football field away.
