Yep, the company was founded in Shirley, Massachusetts in 1881 as C.A. Edgarton and Sons, later becoming the C.A. Edgarton Manufacturing Company. Originally they made non-elastic webbing for suspenders and garters. Hugh G. MacWilliam of St. Paul, Minnesota patented an improved suspender design on 16 August 1898, which he produced carrying the name ‘President’, and registered it as a trademark on 16 May 1899. In the meantime, on 1 October 1898, he had agreed to license manufacture to the Edgarton company, and they ultimately changed their name to the ‘President Suspender Company’ in August 1914.
The ‘Shirley’ sub-brand was named for the company’s location and, although they heavily promoted it using advertising cards depicting women engaged in various sports, it was used for both men’s and women’s suspenders.
