I am trying to understand why some people are addicted to the Garrett pin pointer. Here's what I got from the last post.
The HF is really a toy. Well it picks up a dime at 3/4" the same as the Garrett. Does that make the Garrett a toy?
You bought a Garrett and it was bad, they replaced it! For $130 they should!
It's tuff you can practly hammer it. Well, I treat my equipment with care, I don't beat on them.
It's feels good in your hand. I think they both feel like plastic in your hand.
There's no tuning knob on the Garrett. I guess not you can't tune it! You can tune the HF.
Maybe there both toys that do the same thing, but one cost 6 times as much.

The HF is a toy because it's not durable and dirt and moisture get in it very easily. Even when using it very carefully, expect to have to buy a new one about once a year if you do much MDing.

Scrubber: I have been using the HF unit for almost a year with no problems. About 6 mo. ago I opened it to add a lite that lights when it beeps. It was a very easy mod because of the basic construction. I also saw no dirt or moisture inside the unit! I must admit that I don't TH in the rain, and I scoop on the beech. I did note in a post that there is a warning in the Garrett manual that states water can leak into the speaker hole. If your definition of toy is low price I guess you have it right. It's like the guy in the caddy looking down on the guy in the chevy because he paid thousands more even though they both do well getting from point A to point B.

I guess "TOY" was a poor choice of words I didn't mean to get anyone upset over this subject.
And I sure didn't mean to imply your a better hobbyist if you can afford more expensive equipment.
I currently use a Garrett ACE 250 which is one of the least expensive detectors on the market.
But I am saying that after using three different pin-pointers I like the Garrett the best and the Bounty
Hunter the least. I will also continue to say the Garrett is a clever design, tough, easy to use, accurate,
backed up by a great company "When I lost my battery cover changing the battery they sent me a new
cover no cost." and its made in the United States. If I didn't win my second Pro-Pointer I surely would
have kept y Harbor Freight detector as a backup, it's a great deal for fifteen bucks and if you decide to
get one you will be happy with it. I think having a pin-pointer is much better than having no pin-pointer.
Good luck on whatever choice you make.

But don't leave it in the woods like a lot of guys in the past have!!! :D :D

I put a piece of yellow electric tape around mine to give it some contrast in case I ever drop it.

Yep, but maybe you've been lucky. I've gone through 4 of them in 3 years, and I am very careful how I handle them. Switch wires have a tendency to break off where they're soldered. I've gone in and re-attached them. I tape a piece of plastic over the outside switch hole to keep dirt out, and they still get flaky after a while. Maybe the fact that I use it for 6 to 8 hours a day 6 months a year makes a difference in how long they last. But I like them. I must --I keep buying them :)

Having owned an automax V4, the garrett pro-pointer, whites bullseye II, and bounty hunter pinpointer, I've got to say that the best pointer that I've ever used, and is always on my hip is the pistol probe. I have no problem detecting items 4-6" down before i dig em up and doesn't interfere with my safari. Havent had to change the two 9volts in the 9 months Ive had it using it 3-5 days a week for about 2 hours a day. just my two cents, and although a bit on the expensive side, definitely worth the extra cash.

The Garrett Pro Pin pointer is the best I've ever owned and I've had BH, White's, The V-4 and HF. For my money, Garrett wins hands down.
