Pulltabs and tinfoil - 1970's and now.

All pulltabs were the Beavertail type back then, and not all beverage cans had one. So they were not numerous then, and when you detected one it was still quite shallow. The big, big problem I had at that time was tinfoil from gum wrappers, and they were up to 5" deep. The detector I had was a Heathkit with 10" transmitter/receiver coil. It would get coins as deep as today's detectors, but had no discrimination, and so I usually dug 9 holes for tinfoil (I counted for a while) then 1 coin. Gum wrapper foil is not a problem anymore, but tabs are getting more numerous every day and the older one's are really deep now.

It may in the future be very discouraging to metal detect if all you find are a few surface coins and nothing but pull tabs deeper. I get frustrated sometimes now and I know it will only get worst with time.

Mine wasn't very good but that's probably because I built it. In fact, it was junk and couldn't detect a penny 2 inches deep and pinpointing was awful. I guess I should have let my dad build it for me

I started in the mid 60's and bought my own "quality" machine in 1968 which was an all-metal TR Whites CoinMaster IV. It cost $200 via mail order and could reach a silver quarter at up to 7 inches in mild soil. Funny but that's about all many modern VLF's can do. It gets ya to thinkin, doesn't it?

Anyway, foil still is a pain for me. I'm usually a relic hunter but due to a bad knee I've been doing sidewalks and such lately. Pulltabs are bad but that stinkin foil tops all.

And as we all know, to discriminate out foil is to lose lots of nice gold.

I am just "kinda" thinking...why in the heck do I find so many new pull tabs.....It takes a lot of effort to pull those things off cans...wonder why in the heck someone would go through all that effort....guess it is for my exercise in diggin..lol HH all

As my informative wife always quips back to me whenever I make such a notable and intelletctual point............."because they can".

Hey, SC_hunter, I'm heading to the Myrtle Beach, SC area tomorrow for 2 weeks. Am hoping the wife will do her normal outlet mall shopping while I get down to more serious things.............MD'ng the beach and watching the women! Now...I know the Orangeburg area is about 3 hours from there, but if you just happen to catch me speeding....{never} ...how about giving professional courtesy to a fellow MD'er....

LOL...I know you will have a fun time at the beach...and lets just say...there are a lot of sights to see so wear your mirrored sunglasses..lol If you run into any of my "friends"...ask them if they know the old grouchy trooper that works in the IT section...You might get lucky..lol BTW...sounds like my wife..lol

BCH had a good thread about the history of pulltabs with photos.

Likewise as I entered in the early 60's pulltabs were not a problem. Yes the big problem was tinfoil. Commonly very small pieces would just be under the grass and would sound like deep coins.

However, I would gladly go back in time to detect those virgin sites using the old BFOs. Just a heck of a lot of fun back then.

Well, I'm ending my week in North Myrtle Beach...............complete with being next door to the Shaggers Convention....Wheeeeeeeeee

As far my finds.........about $3 in change...............and tons of beer bottle caps!!!!!!!!! Very few tabs, just those pesky bottle caps. Oh, and a pair of sunglasses and a fishing sinker....oh well. I have come to the conclusion that here in Myrtle Beach, the choice of beer is Michelob. ha/ha

They say that a couple of weeks from now Biker Week will produce a ton of good finds........hmmmmmmmmm
Loved it here, and now to Hilton Head for some more MD'ng!

borninok.....Glad you had a good time at Myrtle Beach...I used to have to go down and work the biker weekends....That was not fun...I saw sights no man should have to see and they weren't pop tops...lol Maybe better luck at Hilton Head..Keep us posted.

Man the Galveston Biker Weekend is a great event to work...Lots of goodies, and the people are the greatest....
