Yes , Hi pressure is the driving force for dredging. the trash pumps are for washing material in high bankers and such.
 

Also trash pumps are often super heavy.
 

Dredge pumps have cast in hose bibs for a blaster nozzle which is absolutely mandatory to any dredge operation. John
 

Yes the volume is the same but a centrafugal pump has more pressure / flow. The biggest difference is in the impeller .
 

They’re both centrifugal pumps. The clearances between the impeller and housing are larger inside a trash pump. Also the impeller and housing are different designs between the two. Dredge pumps have tight clearances so they can build a lot of pressure without it bleeding off and recirculating inside the pump housing. To use a trash pump you will need to make the Venturi jet larger for better flow at lower pressure.
